THUMP (VICE): MIXED By Amine Edge & DANCE

House music has a million little mutant variations, and right now G-House, or gangsta-house, is really scratching my itch. Made up of rap and R&B snippets and guttural, upfront basslines, G-House was introduced a couple years back by French producers Amine Edge & DANCE—and it’s already gone global. The beat-making monsieurs have frequently headlined parties in Brazil, Miami, and London with their badman blend of house music, and this summer will see them take on the big one: Sankeys in Ibiza.

When news surfaced that the duo were to become residents at the esteemed venue, I’m pretty sure my jaw wasn’t the only one on the floor. Sankeys, as a nightclub chain, has been known to stay well clear from all forms of shuffle-inducing house (they even banned Bieber from their Manchester branch for doing the move), so having Amine Edge & DANCE on the bill is a sign that management is opening up to house music's various vibes.

Amine Edge had this to say: "We’re so, so, so happy and excited for our first residency in the island at the legendary Sankeys, as they always push for new music and innovation. Along with their new CUFF residency at Sankeys, this year also sees Amine Edge & DANCE turning their hands to A&R, signing acts (and releasing their own music) under their own upstart imprint, CUFF Records. THUMP (VICE): MIXED By E.m.m.a

Someone once described the sadly-defunct SUPERSUPER Magazine as "clown vomit"—and with its infatuation with day-glo colors, drag queen fashion, and half-demented design aesthetics, I can understand why. I never would have thought that my former editor at the magazine would end up becoming a much-hyped bass music producer. But whaddya know. 

Liverpool-born E.m.m.a started making music six years ago, inventing her own brand of "Victorian grime" using classical vocal samples and Fruity Loops-made beats. Soon, she began to implement sounds snatched from UK funky, dub, and breaks into her productions. And in July of this year, she finally released her experimental LP, Blue Gardens, on Keysound Recordings.

"Although grime has been an influence on my sound, I’m in the fringes of that scene. I couldn’t look D Double E in the eye and say, 'I make grime,;" she told me, laughing. "I’ve just stuck to my guns and developed my own sound, which seems to be going well so far. I hope people appreciate what I make, because I’ve made some bangers and you can’t really argue with them."

E.m.m.a. is currently working on some tunes with Hyperdub’s LV, Keysound’s Etch, and Soundman Chronicles' Parris—producers who, like herself, "stick to making what they like and don’t try to build beats for what they think people want to hear." Those guys are also featured on E.m.m.a.'s hypnotic mix for THUMP—which is stuffed with more than a few of her own gems, including some never-heard-before exclusives. Close your eyes and breathe it in.

THUMP (VICE): MIXED BY My Nu Leng

In England, a "leng" is what they call a gun in the hood. So when I got an email from my favourite record label, Black Butter Records, with the words My Nu Leng in the subject line, I expected to be confronted with a hard-edged grime MC, or something. The email contained a picture of two meek-looking lads named Tommy and Jammo, who just so happen to be rising fast in the bass scene. But don't take their low-key looks for granted. The Bristol-based duo cites early garage, grime, and the one man genre known as Burial as their main influences, which explains why their music is sometimes punchy, sometimes ugly, sometimes pretty, and often packing more low end than your usual house groove.

My Nu Leng has been supported by BBC Radio 1, done remix work for chart-topping acts like Naughty Boy and Rudimental, and released a slew of EPs--Hips & Thighs, The Grid, Damp, Time Goes By, and their entrance to Black Butter Records, Elite—but they’re just getting warmed up. And we're gunning for them.

THUMP (VICE): MIXED By Spooky

We recently profiled UK producer, Preditah, who’s currently sitting comfortably at the round table with the rest of grime's young elite. Among his competition is east London’s Spooky, who makes grime so hard that it could start a riot. "MCs are still vital, but the producers needed to come to the forefront a long time ago," says Spooky when asked about the scene's shifting focus from hard bars to big riddims. "Maybe then we wouldn't have seen that dip we saw a few years ago, which saw guys drifting off to funky house and dubstep. That dip was needed, though—just to see who was really about this life of grime."

Spooky’s life of grime in 2013 has consisted of non-stop touring, including numerous dates in Europe ("Slovakia was a madness! A girl approached the DJ booth and presented me with flowers for playing such a sick set. I'll say no more [laughs]") and East Coast dates in the US. He released a new EP on avant-grime label, Oil Gang, and another on his own Ghost House Records. He also has his own show on Deja Vu FM. With Halloween around the corner, it made sense for us to get a mix from Sir Spooky himself. So go ahead and spook yourselves out over some head-banging, devilish bass—all one hour and thirteen minutes of it—after the jump.

THUMP (VICE): Meet Preditah, The Gospel-Loving Grime Producer

MCs were once the primary driving force behind the decade-old genre of grime. Their lyrical wizardry, animated stage presence, and seemingly endless reserve of diss tracks aimed at other grime MCs touched audiences across the UK and abroad, from rudeboys and ravers to indie kids and art school types. However, there's been a major shift in power over the last two years. Gone are the days when producers would sit at home on the weekends twiddling their buttons, whilst rhyme-throwers got paid top dollar from rave promoters to spit catchy ad-libs. The tables have since turned and, today, the scene is thriving as an instrumental-focused one, with beat-makers getting big-buck-bookings to spin their homemade creations.

Could it be that fans of the music have grown out of getting "gassed" on non-stop braggadocio and "suck your mum" lyrics, and would rather dissect the beat under the bars? Or perhaps it’s because of certain British nightclub owners who have barred MCs from their stages, thinking that Sidewinder-style shows might "bring the wrong type of crowd." Reasoning aside, this switch has been waiting to be flipped for a hot minute.

The latest producer success story is Birmingham's Preditah, whose melodic, bass-laced cuts have turned him into somewhat of a grime celeb. "I initially got into grime music from listening to 2-step and garage music," he explains. "I heard a good few instrumentals growing up, but what really got my attention was Dom Perignon and Dynamite's Hungry Tiger. I was particularly amazed by the drum pattern he used, and the heavy bassline that it had. Eventually, I took what I heard and applied it to my beginner compositions."



"I've been brought up on gospel music," he adds. "My mother played it non-stop in the house, and I heard it in church every single Sunday. It's just in me to bring a gospel feel to my music. If I compose a track or remix, I'll naturally apply a few chord progressions and write a few harmonies in parts of the track. I just can't help it."

Preditah got his break in early 2012, with the release of his Circles EP. Distributed by Earth616, the label owned by Kiss FM's Logan Sama, each of the four instrumentals on the EP quickly became a favorite for MCs, especially the title track. "I’d have to say Circles is one of my top productions, simply because of how well it's done and what it continues to do," he says. Red Bull is another one, as it has a real old garage or early grime vibe to it. But my all-time favorite production to date is The Beat Skipped. It's on the Gears Of Grime EP and, sound-wise, it's like 2-step-meets-grime. I think it's the melodies that draw people in, more than anything."

All in the space of a year, Preditah has graced the cover of RWD Magazine, appeared in Mixmag, toured across Europe, and mixed for Boiler Room, all while remix work has continued to flood in. Things are looking extremely promising for the Boy Better Know beatsmith, even more so now that he's recently inked a deal with Xenomania Records.

"Release-wise, I'm busy working on a few singles featuring a few artists and it's sounding amazing!" says Preditah. "I'm just trying to broaden the horizons and do a few songs, alongside knocking up instrumentals for the clubs. The first few tracks I'll be bringing out are La Playa and Take It Back, which are both garage-influenced productions, but my new EP, El Futuro, is out right now for the fans."
